Securing Seaport Logistic Vehicles Using a Distributed Ledger-Based Credential Management System

Major maritime carriers are globally demanding improvements in the efficiency of port operations. Cargo carried by ships must be loaded and unloaded quickly with minimal stopover time port. This requirement mandates seaports to deploy cutting-edge technology area so that logistic processes increasingly efficient reliable. In this scenario, attack surface such critical infrastructure is growing very rapidly advanced security techniques deployed enforce a high resilience. A Distributed Ledger-based Credential Management System exploiting Ledger Technology (DLT) enable transparent real-time tracking vehicles cargos within terminal presented paper. Based on customization Vehicular Ad-Hoc Network (VANET) standards, proposed scheme provides authentication, authorization, revocation capabilities promptly exclude misbehaving from system, while maintaining an immutable record all vehicles' activity. The laboratory validation demonstrates delay devised not dependent quay capacity, thus being applicable any size. Furthermore, effectiveness solution demonstrated field trial results obtained EU Horizon 2020 COREALIS project testbed Port Livorno.
